Laundry may seem like a routine chore, but new survey data from Poplin.co suggests it carries far more emotional weight than most people realize.
In a survey of 600 Americans, more than half (54%) said laundry ranks among their top stressors or daily annoyances. Nearly as many (44%) admitted that simply thinking about doing laundry can make them feel anxious or unhappy. It’s not hard to see why—49% of respondents reported spending more than three hours each week sorting, washing, drying, and folding.
And despite that time investment, laundry still tends to pile up. Only 28% of people said their dirty clothes never accumulate on the floor, highlighting a widespread struggle to keep up with the task.
Laundry’s impact goes beyond time and stress—it’s affecting relationships, too. A surprising 44% of respondents said they would judge a romantic partner based on their laundry habits, while nearly one-third (32%) of those in relationships admitted to arguing about it. For some, the stakes are even higher: 19% have avoided inviting someone over because of visible laundry, and 38% said they’ve delayed something important in their lives just to deal with it.
When asked which chore they’d eliminate forever, 21% chose laundry—second only to toilet scrubbing (32%). That puts laundry firmly among the least-loved household responsibilities in America.
